Can Red Light Therapy Help Hair Growth?

A comparison of a man's scalp before and after using a cap with red light therapy.

You’ve probably seen images like the one above and wondered. Can red light therapy really help hair growth? If so, how?

Well, this article will be answering your question and throwing red light on your deep dark desires to know how and why it can happen.

The science behind red light therapy and hair growth.

Over the years, a few studies have been carried out, leading to discoveries as to how red light therapy works. The major ways for which red light therapy aids hair growth are as follows:

  1. Stimulating the mitochondria
  2. Boosting blood flow and oxygen supply to hair follicles
  3. Reducing inflammation that can damage hair follicles.

To further inform you about these discoveries, we’ll be reviewing two major studies by the National Institutes Of Health.

     I. A randomized study published in The American Journal of Clinical Dermatology.

In 2014, researchers studied whether red light laser combs could help with hair growth in people with pattern hair loss. Over six months, they tested the combs on 128 men and 141 women. To keep the study fair, some used real laser combs, while others used fake ones with no red light. Neither the participants nor the researchers knew who had which device.

The participants used the combs three times a week, and hair growth was measured at the start, 16 weeks, and 26 weeks. The study also tested combs with 7, 9, and 12 laser beams across four trials.

Results showed that people using the real laser combs grew 18 to 26 more thick, healthy hairs per square centimeter compared to just 1.6 to 9.4 hairs for those using the fake devices. Both men and women reported fuller, thicker hair with no serious side effects, proving the combs’ effectiveness and safety.

II. A Recent (2021) Study Published By The Korean Dermatological Association and The Korean Society for Investigative Dermatology.

Researchers tested red (655 nm) and near-infrared light (830 nm) on human subjects. Their overall aim was to produce a more effective treatment for Androgenetic alopecia.

Human hair follicles were collected from hair transplant patients with AGA. Then, the samples were cultured and treated with  and without red light.

The results demonstrated that 665 nm red light promoted rapid proliferation (growth) in the cells, marking an increase in hair regrowth, as well as reversing the effects of AGA with visible improvements after 12 weeks of consistent use.

How Effective Is Red Light as a Hair loss treatment.

Taking reference from the two studies of red light hair treatment, we can confidently answer. YES, red light therapy is effective for hair loss treatment.

The research not only shows that red light promotes blood flow to hair follicles but also that red light therapy aids inflammation reduction and promotes overall hair growth.

For the fact nerds like myself, here are the percentage increase in hair fullness observed in subjects using red light therapy.
